Missoula Montana—the second largest city in the Big Sky State—and its surrounding communities offer those who live here a wealth of opportunities for a healthy and fun lifestyle.
OUTDOOR RECREATION
Nicknamed the Garden City for its temperate climate (average temps: January - 30 degrees; July - 85 degrees), the city of Missoula forms the hub of five valleys, including the beautiful Bitterroot Valley to the south on Highway 93.
With its international freeway (I-90) and international airport, Missoula is considered a gateway to many adventure locations, including Flathead Lake, the west’s largest freshwater lake, just 90 minutes away on the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes’ Reservation. A couple hours further north, you’ll find the majestic Glacier National Park, which borders Canada. Western Montana’s ancient Blackfeet tribal members called this part of the Rocky Mountains “the backbone of the world.”
Missoula also boasts several national forests and wildlife refuges, such as the National Bison Range at Moise. You can find the Rattlesnake Recreation Area and the Bob Marshall Wilderness within minutes of downtown. The city is also headquarters for the US Forest Service Region 1, the Montana Department of Natural Resources, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the Montana Natural History Center.
With so many mountains, you’ll also find Missoula within reach of many popular ski resorts. The world famous local hill “Montana Snowbowl” is just 30 minutes from downtown Missoula.
Plus the mighty Clark Fork River runs right through Missoula, and many of its neighborhoods are homes to year round creeks. Fishermen are drawn to surrounding blue-stream rivers, such as Rock Creek to the east.
For more urban outdoor fun, check out the new Splash Mountain aquatics center, the golf courses, sports arenas, and skateboarding park in downtown Missoula.
